A shower of 60,000 paper rose petals are released fro the five tonne, 28 metre tall Macchina di Santa Rosa (Machine of Saint Rose, patron saint of the town of Viterbo) as it rests at one of the stops during its transportation of 1 kilometre through the darkened mediaeval streets of Viterbo on the backs of 100 volunteers who form the Fraternity of the Facchini (porters). This year saw the debut of a new machine named the Flowers of the Sky designed by the achitects Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler of the Architecture and Vision architectural firm. The "transportation" which takes place every 3rd September, is followed by thousands of tourists and the ecstatic, wildly cheering citizens of Viterbo.
