The five tonne, 28 metre tall Macchina di Santa Rosa (Machine of Saint Rose, patron saint of the town of Viterbo) passing through Viterbo's darkened mediaeval streets. This year saw the debut of a new machine named the Flowers of the Sky designed by the achitects Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler of the Architecture and Vision architectural firm. Every year on the 3rd Sept the machine is carried by just over a hundred porters (the facchini) over a 1 kilometre course. The "transportation" is followed by thousands of tourists and the ecstatic, wildly cheering citizens of Viterbo.
