One hundred and forty facchini, (porters) pull and carry the five tonne, 28 metre tall Machine of Saint Rose (patron saint of the town of Viterbo) on the final 180 metre leg of the 1 kilometre course through the mediaeval town. This year saw the debut of a new machine named the Flowers of the Sky and designed by the achitects Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler of the Architecture and Vision firm. Every year on the 3rd Sept the spectacle is followed by thousands of tourists and the ecstatic, wildly cheering citizens of Viterbo.
